Steven Rodriguez, who was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and now lives in nearby Bayamón, is a multifaceted photographer. He is equally at home shooting family parties, weddings and quinceañeras as he is working on professional portfolio for up-and-coming male models, and his talent shows in his diverse portfolio. He took time to share his thoughts — as well as some of his best male model photography — with portfolioLATINO.com.

How did you start in photography?
I began 23 years ago, with film and I remember that my first 35mm camera was a Jassica or at least that’s how it was pronounced. Later I upgraded from a Volkswagen to a Mercedes, and bought myself a Canon.
I stopped doing photography and when I started again, it was totally different — the digital era. I decided to study with Professor Antonio Sanchez Gaetan at Sacred Heart University’s Department of Photography.
It’s not my primary work; I am director of security for the National Parks company in Puerto Rico. Photography is my main pastime and a source of additional income.
¿Cómo empezaste con la fotografía?
Empeze hace 23 años en la fotografía, con el sistema de película y recuerdo que mi primera cámara de 35 mm fue un Jassica o almenos así se pronunciaba, luego me baje del Volkie y me subí a un Mercedes, comprandome una Canon.
Me retire de la fotografía y cuando volví, ya era otra cosa, la Era Digital... decidí irme a estudiar fotografía con el Profesor Antonío Sánchez Gaétan, Catedrático de la Universidad Sagrado Corazón, del Departamento de Fotografía.
No es mi trabajo principal, me desempeño como Director de Seguridad de la Compañía de Parques Nacionales en Puerto Rico. La Fotografía en mi pasatiempo principal y fuente de ingreso adicional.
What types of photography do you like the most?
I do a little of everything, from fashion to big events — weddings, quinceañeros, outdoor and studio shots. In terms of what I like the best, in every event that I photograph, it becomes a challenge for me. To make a wedding original, not repetitive and look for spontaneous shots that aren’t posed. The same goes for quinceañeros.
But when it comes to creating professional portfolios for models, that really is a challenge for me. When I have a model in front of me, I’m like a sculptor with a lump of clay, to which I need to give form in order to create the final product. That’s how I feel when I’m with a model, and that’s what I’m most passionate about.
¿Qué clase de fotografía te llama la atención?
Hago de todo, desde fashion hasta extravaganzas. — bodas, quinceañeros, fotos en exteriores y estudios. Respecto a lo más que me gusta, en cada evento que retrato, se convierte en un reto para mí. Una boda, ser original no ser repetitivo y buscar las tomas expontaneas y no posadas... igual con los quinceañeros.
Pero cuando se trata de crearles los porfolios profesionales a los modelos, eso si que se convierte en un verdadero reto para mí. Pues cuando tengo un modelo de frente, es como el escultor con su masa de barro, a la cual tiene que comenzar a darle forma, hasta alcanzar el producto final. Así me siento frente a un modelo, es lo más que me apasiona.

You’ve worked with a lot of excellent models. How do you find them and what do you look for in a model?
Thanks for the compliment. I find them by publishing ads in social networks; it has a good result and doesn’t cost anything. Some models I discover on social networks and I invite them to pose.
I look for people who can project, who have presence and good bodies, since that’s what sells. I don’t necessarily look for people with modeling experience; in the end, I’m the architect.
Has colaborado con varios modelos bien talentosos. ¿Cómo los encontraste, y qué buscas en un modelo?
Gracias por el elógio. Los consigo publicando anuncios en las redes sociales, eso da buen resultado y no cuesta nada. A otros los identifico por las redes sociales y les extiendo una invitación.
Busco que tengan proyección, presencia y buenos cuerpos, al fin eso es lo que vende. No los busco necesariamente con experiencia en el modelaje ni nada por el estilo, al final de cuentas, yo seré el arquitecto.

The talent in Puerto Rico is rich and varied. There are so many mixtures of races that that makes us diverse and interesting.
¿Cómo describiriás los modelos y el talento en Puerto Rico?
El talento en Puerto Rico es variado y rico. Hay tantas mezclas de razas que eso nos hace diversos e interesantes.
What about the modeling industry there?
Unfortunately the modeling industry in Puerto Rico is a hard road for them. It’s an industry that basically doesn’t pay; the only thing that pays here are commercials that models make. But posing for magazines, runway modeling and posing for designers doesn’t pay. Everyone wants that as an exchange of talent, and no one can live on exchanges. Models that reach a respectable level of professional accomplishment end up emigrating to the United States or Europe.
¿Cómo describirías la industría de modelaje en Puerto Rico?
Lamentablemente la industria del modelaje en Puerto Rico es bien cuesta arriba para ellos. Es una industria que relativamente no paga; lo único que paga aca son los comerciales que puedan hacer los modelos. Pero ni posar para revistas ni las pasarelas de diseñadores, paga, pues todo lo quieren por intercambio y por intercambio nadie vive. Los que logran situarse en un nivel bastante respetable, terminan emigrando a Estados Unidos o Europa.

What advice can you offer aspiring models?
The first thing is that they have to be consistent and disciplined. What kills any profession, job, business or project is inconsistency and lack of discipline.
The other important thing is that they need to maintain their bodies like a temple: good diet, an exercise routine and lotion and moisturizers — even for men, who because of the machismo that exists here, don’t take care of themselves, so we end up seeing models with very dry skin, blotchy, etc. That will kill their opportunities. For everyone else, the sky is the limit, and they shouldn’t let anyone rob them of their dreams.
¿Cuáles sugerencias ofrecerías a alguien interesado en explorar este mercado?
Lo primero es: tienen que ser consistentes y disciplinados. Lo que mata a cualquier profesión u oficio, negrocio o proyecto, es la incosistencia y la falta de disciplina.
Lo otro, cuidar sus cuerpos como templos, buena dieta, una rutina de ejercicios y sus cremas y humetantes, si para los varones, que por el machismo existente aquí, se descuidan en eso, y vemos modelos con pieles resecas, manchadas, etc. — eso los mata mucho.
Por lo demás, el cielo es el límite, y no deben dejar que nadie les robe sus sueños.
