There is an amazing amount of talent in Latin America when it comes to both photography and modeling. In past postings, I featured interviews with two different photographers based in Lima, Peru: Fabián Alata and Miguel Loli. Now, I've turned my gaze northward, to Panama, where there is also no lack of talent. This interview and portfolio sample — with Luís de la Flor — is the first of the series of my Panama interviews (please be sure to let me know if you know of a talented photographer or model in Latin America who you'd like to see featured on portfolioLATINO!).
Hay una gran cantidad de gente talentosa en latinoamérica, especialmente en lo que se trata del modelaje y fotografía. Ya he subido entrevistas y fotos de dos fotógrafos de Lima, Perú: Fabián Alata y Miguel Loli. Ahora, seguimos un poco más hacía el norte, hasta Panamá, donde también hay mucho talento creativo. Esta entrevista y colección de fotos — de Luís de la Flor — es la primera en un serie que estoy haciendo sobre Panamá. (¡Y favor de dejarme saber si conoces a algún modelo o fotógrafo talentoso en cualquier parte de latinoamérica!)
Ever since he was young, 22-year-old Luís de la Flor — who lives in Panama City — has had a passion for photography. Here, he shares some of his work, and his thoughts about the creative process.
Desde pequeño, Luís de la Flor ha sentido una pasíon para la fotografía. Luís tiene 22 años y vive en la ciudad de Panamá. Aquí comparte unas de sus fotos y sus pensamientos.
How long have you been a photographer?
I've had a passion for photography since I was little. When I was eight years old, my parents bought me a camera and ever since I developed a great interest in photographing interesting things. Over time, I became more involved, until my secondary studies, which was when I decided to study publicity and marketing, with an emphasis in computer graphic design. I still haven't decided on photography as a career.

¿Cuanto tiempo llevas como fotografo?
Realmente esta pasión que siento por tomar fotografías nace desde muy pequeño, cuando a los 8 años mis padres compraron una cámara fotográfica para mí y desde entonces adquirí un gran interés por fotografiar cosas interesantes y así con el paso del tiempo fui involucrándome más continuamente hasta culminar mis estudios secundarios que es donde decido estudiar la carrera de Publicidad y Mercadeo con énfasis en diseño gráfico computacional pues una de las materias que mas me interesaba en esta carrera era la de fotografía, actualmente tengo 22 años y aun no me he decidido a la fotografía por completo pues acabo de culminar mis estudios y estoy interesado en seguir otra carrera.
Realmente esta pasión que siento por tomar fotografías nace desde muy pequeño, cuando a los 8 años mis padres compraron una cámara fotográfica para mí y desde entonces adquirí un gran interés por fotografiar cosas interesantes y así con el paso del tiempo fui involucrándome más continuamente hasta culminar mis estudios secundarios que es donde decido estudiar la carrera de Publicidad y Mercadeo con énfasis en diseño gráfico computacional pues una de las materias que mas me interesaba en esta carrera era la de fotografía, actualmente tengo 22 años y aun no me he decidido a la fotografía por completo pues acabo de culminar mis estudios y estoy interesado en seguir otra carrera.
What attracted your attention about photography?
Ever since I was very small, I was a dynamic and creative kid. I suppose the act of experimenting and discovering new things made me develop an interest in this marvelous art. I started by photographing my nieces and nephews and later friends from school. At the age of 18 I entered the Universidad Latina de Panamá, where I must thank my professors, including Iván Costella, Fernando Batista and Edwin Cedeño, for having confidence in my talent and sharing their wisdom.

Qué te llamo la atención en la fotografia?
La verdad desde muy pequeño fui un niño bastante dinámico y creativo, supongo que el hecho de experimentar y descubrir nuevas cosas me hizo desarrollar ese interés por este arte tan maravilloso, empecé fotografiando a mis sobrinas y luego compañeras del colegio y ahora cuando vemos esas fotografías nos reímos y nos sorprendemos por las cosas que llegamos hacer que de paso fue con cariño y con dedicación. A los 18 años ingresé a la Universidad Latina de Panamá donde debo agradecerles a profesores como Iván Costella, Fernando Batista y Edwin Cedeño por confiar en mi talento y brindarme sus conocimientos.

What is the message you hope to communicate with your work?
I always try to communicate my own style with each photograph, but the pure essence is to transmit the idea that one moment in time doesn't happen twice, and with this marvelous art we can capture the feeling, the moment and the passion through the art of magic. This, I hope will make my goals and dreams as a photographer become reality — to become a recognized photographer on an international level and to be able to acquire a professional camera, since the one I have right now is semi-professional.

¿Cuál es el mensaje mas importante, o concepto más importante que esperas comunicar con tu fotografia?
Siempre trato de comunicar mi estilo propio en cada fotografía, pero mi esencia pura siempre se mantiene en transmitir el hecho de que un momento igual no se vive 2 veces y con este maravilloso arte podemos captar el sentimiento, el momento y la pasión como por arte de magia y ese simple hecho hace que mis metas y sueños como fotógrafo se conviertan en realidad al convertirme en un reconocido fotógrafo a nivel internacional y poder adquirir una cámara fotográfica profesional pues la que poseo actualmente es semi profesional.

How would you describe the models in Panama, and the opportunities for photographers?
That's a very interesting question. Panama is a crucible of races, a bridge of the world and heart of the universe, so the quality of modelos is very extensive. You'll always find a bit of everything, and a lot of potential. One thing that characterizes our models is the competitive spirit, and this makes the opportunities for photographers here very interesting because you'll always find daring models who have the will to succeed and give their best, so the photos will be unique and the best in the market.
¿Cómo describirías los modelos en Panama, y las oportunidades para fotografos allá?
Muy interesante esta pregunta, cabe resaltar que Panamá es un crisol de razas, puente del mundo y corazón del universo por ende la calidad de modelos es muy amplia, siempre encontrarás de todo un poquito y con mucho potencial pues algo que identifica a nuestros modelos es esa cualidad competitiva en donde encuentras tu superación y esto hace que las oportunidades para otros fotógrafos aca sea realmente interesante pues siempre contarás con modelos atrevidos, con ganas de superación y de dar lo mejor con tal de que sus fotografías sean únicas y las mejores del mercado.

In addition to being a photographer, you've also modeled. How did you start with that?
Modeling I didn't see as a passion when I was little, just a hobby, but I learned a lot in the classes I took. I don't work as a model full-time because I don't have the necessary height; I'm 1.70 cm tall. I think my height would only work well as a model for photos and not for runways. But what I like most about modeling is the versatility that you can develop and radiate to the public — an array of emotions, ideas and thoughts without even speaking.

Además de ser fotógrafo, eres modelo. ¿Cuánto tiempo llevas como modelo?
Bueno, lo del modelaje no lo vi desde pequeño como una pasión, simplemente como un hobbie pero realmente en los cursos que tomé aprendí muchísimo, se puede decir que no me dedico al modelaje pues no cuento con la estatura requerida ,mido 1.70 y creo que esta estatura me serviría bien únicamente como modelo de fotografías mas no de pasarelas, pero créeme que lo que más me gusta del modelaje es la versatilidad con la que puedes desarrollarte y emanar ante el público desde ti una gama de sentimientos, ideas y pensamientos sin necesidad de hablar.

How does your experience as a model affect your work as a photographer?
It makes things much easier, because I can put myself in both sets of shoes. As a photographer and as a model I can perceive what's best for a photograph, the appropriate attitude, the perfect pose and the quality that a model should highlight in his photos. It's not an easy task but the result is always impressive.

¿Cómo afecta tu experiencia como modelo, a tu trabajo como fotógrafo?
Realmente el camino se me hace mucho más fácil pues por decirlo así me pongo en ambos zapatos, como fotógrafo y como modelo puedo percibir lo que más conviene en una fotografía, la actitud adecuada , la pose perfecta y la calidad que el modelo debe resaltar en sus fotografías, no es una tarea fácil pero el resultado siempre es impresionante.

What kind of modeling do you like best?
I really like high fashion, because it's interesting work since as a model you have the honor of working with well-recognized and high-quality creations, and commercial modeling, because there are so many diverse styles that the creative director may bring to life.

¿Qué tipo de modelaje te gusta mas?
Realmente me gusta muchísimo el modelaje de alta moda pues es un trabajo muy interesante ya que como modelo te toca el orgullo de llevar contigo una creación reconocida y de excelente calidad y el modelaje de publicidad pues tiene diversas gamas y facetas divertidas según lo que el director creativo quiera plasmar.
Realmente me gusta muchísimo el modelaje de alta moda pues es un trabajo muy interesante ya que como modelo te toca el orgullo de llevar contigo una creación reconocida y de excelente calidad y el modelaje de publicidad pues tiene diversas gamas y facetas divertidas según lo que el director creativo quiera plasmar.
