When I first met Javier Cordero a few years ago, I knew him only as a model. It was during one of my many visits to Panama City, Panama, and we did a two-part photoshoot during which I photographed him in some beautiful historic forts and parts of Panama’s Caribbean coast (the above photo is a sample of the shots I did of him; I will post more later). While we never did do another shoot together, we have kept in touch as Javier has expanded his role from model to photographer. His keen eye for fashion, color, lighting and Photoshop has helped produce an impressive array of work during his three years behind the lens.
Cuando le conocí a Javier Cordero por primera vez hace unos años, él era modelo. Fue durante una de mis varias visitas a la ciudad de Panamá, e hicimos una sesión de dos partes; le fotografié en unas fortalezas historicas y por la costa caribeña de Panamá (la foto aquí arriba es una muestra de mis fotos de él; subiré más despues). Nunca volvímos a hacer otra sesión de fotos juntos, pero nos hemos mantenido en contacto, mientras tanto Javier ha desarollado su carrera, más recientemente, como fotógrafo. Su talento profunda con la moda, los colores, la luz y Photoshop le ha ayudado a crear un portafolio bien impresionante durante sus tres años detrás de las cámaras.

You began as a model first. How did you decide to start working behind the camera as well?
I worked as an engineer, but I was always passionate about photography. I asked a friend to give me a couple lessons in Photoshop, and I quite my job and, well, started at zero, making photos that weren’t that good. But it’s all a matter of learning, and passion.
Empezaste primero como modelo. ¿Cómo decidiste también empezar a trabajar detrás de las cámaras tambien?
Pues yo trabajaba como Ingeniero, pero la fotografía siempre me había apasionado, le pedí a una amiga un par de clases de Photoshop, y renuncié a mi trabajo y bueno, comencé de cero, haciendo unas fotos pues no muy bonitas, pero todo es cuestión de aprendizaje y pasión.

How does your experience as a model affect your work as a photographer?
It’s not that I have all that much experience as a model, but one way or another you try to make the person who’s in front of the camera feel good, and motivate that person when he’s doing good work. It can serve as a guide for the model, and tells him what his best points are.

¿Cómo afecta tu experiencia como modelo a tu trabajo como fotógrafo?
Jeje tampoco es que tenga tanta, pero siento q de alguna manera tratas de hacer sentir bien a la persona q tienes frente a la cámara y motivarla en el momento en el que está dando un buen trabajo, eso le sirve como guía y les dice cuáles son sus puntos a explotar.
