When 23-year-old Miguel Loli was in need of a model on whom to practice his talents as a photographer, he picked someone he knew better than anyone else: Himself. And the results are, as you can see, stunning. He’s since moved on to working with a variety of other models in Lima, and demonstrates great talent with concepts, lighting and editing.
With only about a year of experience under his belt so far, Miguel — who is based in Lima, Perú — proves his talent and creative vision stands up both as a model and a photographer. This is a guy to watch.
Cuando Miguel Loli, un fotógrafo con 23 años en Lima Perú, necesitaba un modelo talentoso y lindo para practicar su trabajo, escogió a alguien que conoce super bien: sí mísmo. Y los resultados son espectaculares, como puedes ver aquí. Desde entonces, ha llegado a colaborar con varios otros modelos, y tiene varios conceptos interesantes que todavía espera realizar. Lleva un poco más de un año haciendo fotografía profesional, pero es obvio que debemos seguir su desarollo en el Mercado.

Cuando Miguel Loli, un fotógrafo con 23 años en Lima Perú, necesitaba un modelo talentoso y lindo para practicar su trabajo, escogió a alguien que conoce super bien: sí mísmo. Y los resultados son espectaculares, como puedes ver aquí. Desde entonces, ha llegado a colaborar con varios otros modelos, y tiene varios conceptos interesantes que todavía espera realizar. Lleva un poco más de un año haciendo fotografía profesional, pero es obvio que debemos seguir su desarollo en el Mercado.
What attracted you to photography?
The ability of the photographer to choose aspects of reality to construct a personal vision. Managing contrast and light to create an image is just amazing. I decided to begin photography because of some graphic design projects I did that involved photography as a means of communication. My career is being a graphic designer, but the subject of photography drew my attention as soon as I experienced it.
¿Que te llamó la atención en la fotografía?
Lo que me llamo la atencion de la fotografia, es la capacidad que el fotografo tiene de escoger angulos de la realidad para construir una vision personal. El manejo del contraste y la luz que modela lo que vemos en una imagen me parece increible. Me decidi a hacer fotografia a traves de proyectos que hice de diseño grafico en los cuales utilice fotografia como medio de comunicacion, mi carrera es de diseño grafico, pero el tema de la foto me llamo la atencion desde que la experimente.

¿Que te llamó la atención en la fotografía?
Lo que me llamo la atencion de la fotografia, es la capacidad que el fotografo tiene de escoger angulos de la realidad para construir una vision personal. What is your goal when you photograph a model?
I like to make use of the versatility of human beings as models; the attitude, posture and body language so that different personalities can be projected from one person in the images.
¿Cuál es tu meta con las personas que fotografías?
Me gusta aprovechar la versatilidad del ser humano como modelo de fotografia, la actitud, la postura y el lenguaje corporal asi como los distintos personajes que una misma persona puede proyectar en imagenes.

What about your own professional goals?
My dream as a photographer is to have the possibility to travel around the world, working with different models and seeing what each one has to offer. I would also like to work with a fashion magazine or on advertising campaigns.

How would you describe the world of modeling in Peru?
Models in Peru are interesting to me in several aspects. Peru is a mixture of physical features and races, and any given model may represent multiple cultures. The hard part is finding models with the size and proportions that are adequate for modeling and, above all, that have the ability to proyect themselves confidently in front of a camera.
I think that there is a good opportunity for photographers who can provide something different from what most people are accustomed to seeing; those who develop a style that differentiates them from others are those that will stand out. In my case, I like to use a lot of color and light to create interesting and pleasing settings.
¿Cómo describirías el mundo de modelaje en Perú?
Los modelos en Peru, a mi parecer son interesantes en algunos aspectos, el peru es una mezcla de rasgos y razas por lo que varios modelos representan muchas culturas en si mismos, lo complicado es encontrar chicos con la talla y las proporciones adecuadas para el modelaje y sobretodo que tengan la habilidad de proyectarse con seguridad frente a una camara. Considero que hay buena oportunidad para los fotografos que puedan aportar algo diferente a lo que uno esta acostumbrado a ver, aquellos que desarrollan un estilo que los diferencie son los que destacaran entre los demas. En mi caso, me gusta trabajar mucho el color y la luz para crear atmosferas interesantes y agradables.

Why did you start using yourself as a model?
At the beginning, it was because I was interested in modeling, but later I noticed that it was a good way to experiment with photography, with editing and also to find my own style. For reasons of time and finding an adequate and available model, it seemed more practical to use myself, because I always have time and interest. But I realize that it’s easier to have someone in front of me to photograph; that way I don’t have to run back and forth every 15 seconds, as fun as that is!
¿Por qué empezaste a usarte a tí mismo como modelo?
La razon por la que me uso como modelo, en un principio fue porque me llamaba la atencion el modelaje pero mas adelante me di cuenta que era una buena manera de experimentar con fotografia, con edicion y tambien para encontrar un estilo, por cuestiones de tiempo y de encontrar un modelo adecuado y disponible, me parecia mas practico usarme a mi porque siempre tengo tiempo y ganas para mi, pero debo reconocer que es mas facil tener alguien en frente a quien fotografiar. asi no tengo que correr delante y detras de la camara cada 15 segundos, ¡por mas divertido que sea!

What projects are you currently working on?
My next project will be to start studying photography, but what I’d like to do this year is develop an anthology of classic stories and translate them with Peruvian aesthetics, that is to say, characters and acts from stories that we all know, but seen through a Peruvian reality, through the models, clothing and backdrops. I would like to take advantage of the resources and realities in my country to advance myself as a photographer, but at any rate I’d like to embrace all possible themes to see how I manage myself as a photographer.
My next project will be to start studying photography, but what I’d like to do this year is develop an anthology of classic stories and translate them with Peruvian aesthetics, that is to say, characters and acts from stories that we all know, but seen through a Peruvian reality, through the models, clothing and backdrops. ¿Cuáles son tus proyectos actuales?
Mi proyecto mas cercano seria comenzar por estudiar fotografia, pero algo que me gustaria hacer este año es desarrollar una recopilacion de momentos de cuentos clasicos y traducirlos con esteticas peruanas, es decir, personajes y acciones de cuentos que todos conocemos, pero vistos desde una realidad peruana, tanto en los modelos como el vestuario y los fondos. me gustaria aprovechar los recursos y realidades de mi pais para lanzarme como fotografo, pero de todos modos quisiera abarcar todos los temas posibles para ver como me manejo como fotografo.
